The brief.
This was spec work, not a paid commission. I made it for a module of Unsplice, a video editing course run by Shiny, an Emmy nominated editor. The task was to cut a five minute documentary using a three act structure, keeping retention and flow paramount while telling the most powerful story I could.
What I did.
There were several threads I could have followed, like the vineyard’s farming practices or the grapes they grow, but the real story was the family restoring their land and building a legacy. I picked that story out of over 7 hours of footage, then selected the music, colour corrected it and treated the dialogue audio to make it clear as a bell.
One of the most challenging parts was splicing different recounts of the same information into coherent sentences, to best portray the story.

The aim was to make the viewer truly invested in the family’s story.
What viewers said.
“This video really captures the emotion of the story. Great storytelling and great audio!”
“The Lightfoot story was laid out well. The audio is crisp and clear. The visuals were nicely layered in with the story. Nice job, Paul. You make it look so easy.”
